Surrounded by the majestic ten mile mountain range
beautiful Breckenridge, Colorado originated in 1859
during the gold fever era of the nineteenth century. Mining
ended here sometime in 1942 and for the next nineteen
years Breckenridge, Colorado came close to ghost town
status. However, Breckenridge which sits at 9,600 feet
elevation had another type of gold called snow and
another type of boom began with the opening of the
Breckenridge Ski Area in 1961. The Eisenhower tunnel
on I-70 was finished in 1973 connecting Denver to Breckenridge
turning a three hour drive into an hour and a half
drive fueling a recreation boom for the Breckenridge
area.
Since 1961 the Breckenridge Ski area has gone from a
2 chairlift operation to 27 chairlifts, 146 runs and
2,208 acres of pure skiing and snowboarding heaven. Not
to mention world class terrain parks, half pipes and
a new gondola opening for the 2007 ski season. With all
these fantastic options it is no wonder why Breckenridge
draws nearly a million and a half skier visits a year.
Not only has the Breckenridge Ski area evolved but so
has the town. It has grown from 336 full time residents
in 1961 to 2,664 in 2004 estimated by the U.S Census
Bureau. With that being said the Breckenridge population
has been known to swell to more then 30,000 during peak
travel seasons.
Breckenridge, Colorado is now a popular year round destination
featuring an array of activities and more the 600 restaurants,
boutiques, art galleries, coffee shops, and many other
shopping and leisure options. The town boasts a 27 hole
Jack Nicklaus designed golf course. Breckenridge also
offers a multimillion dollar recreation center and 2
Olympic sized ice skating rinks. There are miles of hiking
and biking trails and multitude of other activities which
all take place in a fairy tale setting.
